Pros and Cons of Ubuntu Server: A Closer Look

  • February 22, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Personally, I love Ubuntu Server because of how reliable and stable it is. I've used it to host a variety of applications and services, and it's always been rock-solid and dependable. I've never experienced any unexpected downtime or issues with stability, which is a huge plus when you're running critical applications.

In terms of security, Ubuntu Server is also great. It's built on top of Linux, which is known for its strong security features, and Ubuntu specifically receives regular security updates to keep it protected against the latest threats. As someone who values the security of my applications and data, this is really important to me.
What do you dislike about the product?
Steep learning curve: Although Ubuntu Server is generally considered to be user-friendly, some users may find the learning curve to be a bit steep, especially if they're not familiar with Linux or command-line tools.

Limited support for some software: While Ubuntu Server supports many popular software packages and programming languages, it may not support every software package or programming language out there. This could be an issue for users who have specific requirements.

Updates can cause issues: While updates are essential for keeping your server secure and up-to-date, they can sometimes cause issues with existing applications or configurations. This is not unique to Ubuntu Server but is a general issue that affects all server operating systems.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu Server has been incredibly beneficial for me and my organization. One of the most significant advantages is its reliability - we need our servers to be running continuously, and Ubuntu Server has proven to be incredibly stable and dependable. Additionally, its strong security features have given us peace of mind knowing that our sensitive data and applications are well-protected.

Another benefit we've experienced is its ease of use. Despite not having a background in Linux, the user-friendly interface and intuitive command-line tools have made it easy for me to manage and configure our servers without needing to be an expert.

What do you like best about the product?
The software has a huge install base and there is heaps of documentation available. If you run into an issue, there is a good chance someone else has encountered it and they've posted a fix somewhere.
What do you dislike about the product?
Ubuntu's default desktop environment has had a few "misses" over the years. If you're running this as a server operating system there is nothing I could complain about.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu provides a low cost, well supported, light weight server operating system. It's my goto for web services.

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
One of the biggest advantages of Ubuntu is its stability and reliability. It's built on a robust and secure platform that is resistant to viruses and malware. You can trust Ubuntu to keep your data safe and your computer running smoothly, even when you're working on complex tasks.

Another impressive aspect of Ubuntu is the wide range of software applications available in the Ubuntu Software Center. From productivity tools like LibreOffice to creative software like GIMP and Inkscape, there's a vast selection of programs to choose from that can meet all your needs.

And of course, Ubuntu is highly customizable.
What do you dislike about the product?
Ubuntu is known for its steep learning curve, particularly for users who are new to Linux or open-source software. The system can be quite complex and confusing for beginners, which can lead to frustration and a steep learning curve.

While Ubuntu is free to use, it does not come with the same level of support as commercial operating systems. One has to rely on online forums and communities for assistance, which can be time-consuming and not always reliable.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
A wide range of free and open-source software applications are available which saved money on software licensing fees and hardware upgrades, while still benefiting from a robust and powerful operating system.
